This is where small business
diverse from larger ones, the source of finance needed to get the technology
you need to run your business.
We have split up technology into three parts, you’ll notice that Software is
on a separate page (reason for this is simple, it needs more space):
A – Computers
B – Production Machines
C – Transport and Vehicles
A – Computers
Any business today (with maybe a few very small business exceptions)
needs a computer that hums quietly in the background.
Its important to realize that a computer can have a tremendous impact on your
bottom line, as a matter of fact, it can represent the break or make of the entire
business!
We are using the term computer instead of PC or Mac, both can do just as much
work for you, reliability is a completely separate argument… So we call is Computer.
The computer should do the following minimum:
-Write your letters and spell check them (not literary write them, you have to
do that, but a word processor is a needed business tool).
-Receive and send your business emails (which, today, is a vital part
of any business)
-Do your accounts, be it from a complicated accounts program to a simple spreadsheet
For this you need a straightforward computer, most computer comes with the necessary
software packages pre installed (better ask before you’ll buy it). You will also
need a good decent printer and for that Laser is the choice, colour ones are
getting cheaper and cheaper now so that might be something you might want to
look at.
The computer can do so much more than the above like:
-Desktop publishing (for your marketing needs)
-Video Editing for further promotional use
-Receive and send faxes
It can also be a great source of entertainment, its nothing like having your
favourite music playing whilst you’re working away late into the night!
B – Production Machines
Your business might need a machine to produce or change an existing product into
the final selling item.
Do you know what machine you need?
Do you know how to get your machine?
Do you have one already?
Do you know how to secure supplies for it?
Do you need a mechanic for servicing from time to time?
We have had countless submissions about tips and tricks for this section, anything
from getting a cheap ‘T’ shirt printer to welding 12mm steel.
The most important aspect, however, is that the research you do for your business
must cover this section thoroughly, there is no skipping it.
C – Transport and Vehicles
Its no point trying to lead an elephant into a mini, no really, there isn’t!
The means for transportation, depending on your type of business, should
be considered as vital as any other part.
If you’re business is involved only in the local market then, maybe, a simple
transport plan can be considered, but if you are looking to encompass the market
on a nationwide strategy then the transport plan really needs some detail.
The areas you should be looking at are, depending on your business:
Size and Weight
Curriers or own delivery
Post office costs
Packaging and presentation |
