Health and Safety is a very important part of running a business.

As a business owner YOU should make sure that your business meets at least the minimum health and safety standards that are legally required for both your staff and anyone affected by their day to day business activities. This includes both customers and suppliers.

Along with protecting ‘people’ your business also has an obligation to meet the legal requirements needed to protect the environment, such as industrial waste, chemicals, noise etc.
This may seem a daunting task but in reality, if care taken, can be pretty straight forward.

Some of the things you will need to consider:
• Ensure basic levels of comfort
• Put up suitable notices and signs
• Provide suitable first aid facilities
• Carry out a risk assessment of your workplace
• Fire protection
• Make sure equipment is appropriate
• Safe use of IT equipment
• Report incidents in the workplace
• Health and safety for people who work at home

A Risk Assesment of your business is a good starting point and also a Legal Requirement. A ‘risk free’ workplace, impossible I hear you say, and you’d be right! However you can minimize the threats to H&S by carrying out a Risk Assessment, either by yourself if you have the confidence or if not by a H&S specialist. Which ever you decide remember YOU are responsible for seeing its adequately done!

The H&S Law requires that small businesses carry out these Risk Assesments and if you employ 5 people or more you are also required by law:
To protect any of your employees who are or could in the future be a new or expectant mother and record the significant findings of your Risk Assesment in the form of a company Health and Safety policy. The findings from your assessment will need to be available to all employee’s, taking into account any language difficulties or disabilities.
As well as the risk assessment you must keep an accident book, where you need to record any serious injuries, dangerous accidents or diseases that may occur.
